Apple’s main iPhone assembler Hon Hai Technology Group, also known as Foxconn, has partnered with the Investment Ministry of Indonesia to support the development of electric cars in the country.
Over the past few years, Foxconn has expanded their scope of activity from making iPhones to creating electric vehicles (EV), closing deals with US startup Fisker Inc. and Thailand’s energy giant PTT PCL.
Their partnership involves investing in battery manufacturing with the Ministry of Investment and Indonesia Battery Corporation, energy firm PT Indika Energy and Taiwan’s electric scooter seller Gogoro.
In a bid to foster a “new energy ecosystem”, the collaboration spans the development of EV supporting industries, like energy storage systems, battery exchange stations and recycling.
An open MIH platform will also be available to companies in the country. This platform has both hardware and software that will help automobile manufacturers develop EV models for different car models.
Foxconn chairman Liu Young-way reported that they aim to provide components or services to 10% of the world’s EVS between by 2025 to 2027, while lowering manufacturing and other car-making costs, thanks to its expertise as the world’s top contract electronics maker.
