Globe bags top spot at 2021 5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards

Philippine telecommunications giant Globe won the top awards and global recognition for its network upgrade and modernisation efforts at the 5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2021, held by Opensignal, an independent mobile analytics firm with a focus on “quantifying mobile network experience.”

The London-based company measures 5G Games Experience by how users experience real-time multiplayer mobile gaming on an operator’s 5G network in contrast to 4G technology. It takes into account mobile network conditions including latency, packet loss, and jitter, and how these affect gameplay and overall game experience.

Their 5G Video Experience combines real-world measurements of video streams from smartphone users on an operator’s 5G network against 4G. These include picture quality, stall rate, and loading time, to show users’ perceived video experience.

According to Opensignal’s analysis, Globe was first in 5G improvement in Games Experience and second in 5G improvement for video experience.

This demonstrated that user experience improvement could be achieved with investments in 5G, which delivers internet speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G. It also has less lag, which is best for video streaming and gaming.

Video traffic accounts for 66% of mobile data traffic worldwide. 5G users consume more content on their smartphones at a better quality for up to 2.7 times more mobile data than 4G users, according to Opensignal experts. As such, mobile network operators are rolling out commercial 5G networks to support this demand.

Globe also supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, among which emphasise the roles of infrastructure and innovation in driving economic growth and development.
