Global logistics & finance industry veteran Alex Hungate joins Grab as COO

Southeast Asia’s leading super-app, Grab Holdings Limited (“Grab”), has proudly announced that global logistics and finance industry veteran Alex Hungate has joined their ever-expanding leadership team. Joining Group CEO Anthony Tan, Hungate will serve as the company’s Chief Operating Office (COO).

For eight years prior to joining Grab, Hungate led SATS, a leading food solutions and logistics company listed on the Singapore stock exchange. Through innovation, technology, and new ways of working, Alex helped SATS transform its business and culture.

During his tenure, shareholder returns were consistently at the top of The Straits Times Index (STI), a market capitalisation weighted index that tracks the performance of the top 30 companies listed on the Singapore Exchange (SGX), earning him the 2018 Singapore Corporate Award for Best CEO for large capitalisation.

His extensive career includes serving as HSBC Group Managing Director for Personal Financial Services, followed by CEO of HSBC Singapore. In addition, he served as Reuters’ Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Co-CEO for the Americas, and Global Chief Marketing Officer. He was also a non-executive director at UOB Group for four years before joining Grab and serves on the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB).

As Grab’s COO, Hungate will oversee Grab’s mobility, deliveries and financial services businesses, as well as Grab’s marketing and user support functions. He brings over 25 years of leadership experience in the financial services, logistics and food services industries to drive Grab’s super-app strategy.

As Grab continues to expand quickly throughout Southeast Asia, Hungate will be essential in developing and enhancing ecosystem synergies across the company’s major business sectors and assuring operational excellence.

As Hungate stated: “I am truly impressed by the talent and entrepreneurial drive of everyone that I’ve met at Grab. Just like them, I am inspired by the opportunity to help millions of Southeast Asians access the benefits of the digital economy, as we transform the Southeast Asian technology landscape together.”

“Grab’s ability to innovate with our customers and partners in local markets, while building on our scale advantage as the regional super-app leader, positions us well to realise the significant market opportunity ahead,” he continued.

Grab Co-Founder and Group CEO Anthony Tan expressed excitement in working with Hungate, especially during these challenging times. “Grab’s business has been resilient to the uncertainties caused by COVID-19 and its variants, because our super-app strategy has enabled us to diversify our services and increase user engagement.”

“Alex is well-placed to create greater ecosystem synergies across Grab, and drive further growth, engagement and monetization across our core businesses, as he is a proven operator in our industries and has managed global public companies in Southeast Asia.”
